Below is a brief description of the competition categories.

Portrait & People

Nature & LandscapeExtreme close-up photography, usually of tiny subjects and living organisms like insects, in which the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size. The depth of field and good lighting are is essential considerations in macro photography.

Nature & Landscape

May involve the documentation of an area’s landscape, people, cultures, customs and history. The definition of a travel photo is an image that expresses the feeling of a time and place, portrays a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state, and has no geographical limitations.


The collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast that employs images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases, the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism.

Architectural Photography

Photographing of buildings and similar structures that are both aesthetically pleasing and accurate representations of their subjects. Architectural photography typically shows either the exterior or the interior of buildings.

Mobile Photography

A process of editing a photograph in such an extreme way that it takes on an entirely different look. Photo Manipulation goes beyond mere enhancements or corrections. Photo Manipulation blends reality with illusion to create something truly remarkable.

Night Photography

Capturing a candid snippet with impeccable timing and originality to convey a story. Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. Though people usually feature directly, street photography.

Short Film & Video

The short film category requires submitting a script and URL to your short film with a running length of up to a maximum of 18 minutes including credits. The scope can be either documentary, drama, action, animation / stop motion or news. Script, titles and credits are a requirement.

Best of the Emirates

Any socially acceptable images that have been taken in the United Arab Emirates that can include Landscapes, Architecture, Cityscape, Heritage, Cultures and Places.

Junior Category

The Junior category is open to all types of still photography recorded by a phone, DLSR or mirrorless camera and produced at a Junior level (entrants must be under 18 to enter). Photos must have been taken in the past two years. Entrants must be resident in the United Arab Emirates.

Sharjah Govt Open

This open category is specifically for individuals in the employment of the Sharjah Government, residing in the United Arab Emirates. Any socially accepted genre of photography is valid acceptable.
