Looting
Looters flee from a police officer at a shop in the Springfield Value Centre in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. A riot erupted in parts of South Africa in July over former President Jacob Zuma’s imprisonment, resulting in many businesses being looted and burnt. At least 337 people died. Businesses made their plea to President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene and he deployed the arm to the affected areas to bring stability. Even though this looted and damaged shopping centre where this photo was taken will be rebuilt and fully functional by the spring of 2022, some small businesses have closed down permanently. Hundreds of people lost their jobs raising the rate of unemployment to 34.4%, that is 7.8 million jobless people. The whole damage to businesses is worth $1.7 billion (25 billion rand), according to the state insurance company handling the claims. Photo: SANDILE NDLOVU

High Hopes
2020 was the year that will go down in history as the year of Covid. But the world didn’t stop with the Virus. The wars, the poverty, the drought, all the drama in the world continued and people continued to run away in search of a better future, putting their lives in danger. In the Mediterranean Sea, the covid has not stopped even the rescuers, who are at sea every day with a mission, saving lives. From dawn to dusk, these heroes try to save the victims of shipwrecks guided by the greatest feeling that can exist: hope.- Italy 21/11/2020
